About this riff
Lantern Psalm is an eight-bar lead riff in standard tuning: Melodic metal lead, B minor, seventh to twelfth position, strings 2-4. This is level 3 of 3, played at 144 bpm; the three levels of the riff run from 96 to 144 bpm. It works on hammer-ons and pull-offs, slides, vibrato. The player loops the riff with drums and bass, starts at 70% speed and steps up 5% after every clean pass until you play it at full tempo.
Slides land on the beat, so shift with the whole hand, not just the finger. Keep the sixteenths light and alternate-picked, and save the weight for the long notes with wide, slow vibrato.
The three levels
- Level 1 · 96 bpm · Melodic metal lead, B minor, seventh position, strings 2-4. Index on the 7th fret, ring on the 9th.
- Level 2 · 120 bpm · Melodic metal lead, B minor, seventh position, strings 2-4. Pick the first note of each hammer pair and let the fretting finger sound the second.
- Level 3 · 144 bpm · Melodic metal lead, B minor, seventh to twelfth position, strings 2-4. Slides land on the beat, so shift with the whole hand, not just the finger.
